4WD River Crossing - There and Back Discovery Tours, Central Otago

Sam & Wendy Inder both grew up in the Maniototo where their families were settlers and farmed. They always regarded it as home so it only seemed natural that they would return at some time, it was just a matter of when.

After 35 years of farming they moved to Dunedin where

Sam managed the Big Chill Ice Rink for the Dunedin Curling Club. During this time he started organising Curling Tours through the Maniototo and Central Otago in conjunction with Southern Institute of Technology and N Z College for Seniors - Travel and Learn. This led to opportunities to Tour Guide for Odyssey Travel and the Elder Hostel Programme and the chance to attend an Odyssey Travel - Guiding & Group Leaders Conference and Workshop at Wollongong University.

With this experience Sam and his brother Laurie embarked on organising tours into the Hawkdun Mountain run country where their family had been involved as Grazing Lessees for over a century.   However this venture ceased when public pressure led to a long period of uncertainty before the land became part of the Oteake Conservation Park. Meanwhile Sam became manager of the Royal Albatross Visitors Centre on the Otago Peninsula, a position he held for 8 years.

Following this Sam & Wendy opted for a change in lifestyle and decided to return to Naseby where they had a weekend retreat in the form of an old Mud Brick Pub known as the Welcome Inn which dated back to the Gold Rush days. After spending a year or two getting the Inn from weekend status to a home, they started looking for challenges and opportunities. Wendy led the way opening a Gift Shop in the Old Bar and Parlour of the Welcome Inn.

Sam decided to combine his visitor industry experience with his local knowledge, his family association and love of the Maniototo and its history into a form he could share with visitors. Hence the birth of "'There & Back Discovery Tours" and a successful application to the Department of Conservation for a Concession to take tours into the Oteake Conservation Park. Much of this Park was the former Mt lda Syndicate Grazing License land which Sam had mustered and assisted with the original road building earlier in his career.
